As one of the few nations who had seriously been gearing up for war, Mussolini's Italy had developed and perfected a
staggering variety of rations and specialist food packages and supplements to meet their troop's needs in virtually every
environment. Problems arose, to a degree from the fractionalization of Italy's forces, with different departments wanting
to add or change parts of everyday rations or specialist menus. Similarly to Germany, too much research and little or no cooperation
brought about several critical shortage situations. Even though Italy's armed forces surrendered, much of their rations and
supplies, as well as many of their manufacturing plants, were absorbed by the Germans, and continued to play a role in the
German war effort clear to the last day of the war in Europe. Some even served beyond that date, as several of the German
"Werwolf" saboteurs of the immediate post-war period carried Italian made specialist rations on them when caught by Allied
forces.
