Japan's PX--The Soldiers' Store

Even though Japan did not have a standard PX system per se, all Company and larger sized units maintained a small "Soldiers' Store" whenever possible. In it, soldiers could purchase comfort goods, mailing and writing supplies, newspapers and books, snack foods, additional rations, clothing articles (both uniform components and items like slippers etc), as well as liqour and tobacco.

In the stores, Soldiers could always count on finding the following foodstuffs:

Beer (Sapporo brand or local production)

Candies (hard varieties, such as Meiji brand tins, crispy bars and rice candy)

Chewable fruit bars

Canned Fish (Tuna, Squid, Bonito, Crab)

Canned Fruit, such as small tins of Mandarin Oranges

Crackers

Dried Fruit (Prunes, Salted Plums, and Peaches)

Durable Sweet Buns

Meiji Brand tinned hard candy

Pickled Plums

Pickled vegetables, especially radishes

Preserved Noodle Dishes (similar to today's ramen noodle packs)

Rice cakes

Sake (from enlisted rotgut to fairly steeply prices quality)

Furthermore, a wide selection of what today be called 'fast food' was available at the better stocked and equipped Soldiers' Stores, ranging from sweet buns over fruit bowls to rice and fish banana leaf-wrapped "sandwiches".

(-: Soldier Store Happy Meal :-)

According to one Japanese Gentleman in Portland who served as a driver in the Japanese Army in the Philippines, Most of the men's money would be spent at the Soldiers' Store, buying not only important things like additional food for the field or stationary to write home, but much in the way of snacks and drinks, as boredom in many garrisons led to constant snacking.

Please come back soon, as there will be a complete store products listing for the standard Soldiers' store including prices (as compared to soldiers' pay scales) in the not-so-distant future!
